35 minutes drive away, Angoulême is an elegant and interesting city, famous for its veteran car ramparts race each September.
The town overlooks the valley of the Charente and is surrounded by the ramparts which extend for 3km around the city and were built in the fourth century as a fortification.
There are a number of annual festivals in Angoulême:
- Classics and Jazz Festival.
- A highlight in any car enthusiast’s diary is the annual ‘Circuit des Remparts’ held the third weekend in September. First staged back in 1939, the weekend-long events sees classic cars hurtling around the ancient, twisting roads of this pretty hill-top town. The weekend starts on the Friday with the ‘Concours d’Elegance’ (Elegance Parade) when owners get the chance to show off their gleaming cars – prizes are awarded for the best presented car and driver which was won by an immaculate 1948 Delahaye in 2012. The cars are parked throughout the town centre so it is a great opportunity to get close to them and talk to the owners before the more pressured race day. Saturday is the day of the Charente International Rally, a leisurely affair with some 300 cars taking part. The route is released a few days beforehand and includes a generous lunch stop at one of the sights of the area. The cars return to Angoulême late afternoon and there are great picnic stops along the way if you want to watch them pass. Race day is Sunday and best watched from one of the stands but book your ticket early as they do sell out. More than 120 teams take part in the eight different classes making for a fascinating series of races with their fair share of spills and thrills throughout!
- Festival Ludoland Festival of Games
- Gastonomades Food Festival
