La Rochelle is about a 70 minute drive from us. It is a coastal city in the Poitou Charentes region of southwest France. It has been a harbour and a centre for fishing and trade since the 12th century, a maritime tradition that's reflected in its Vieux Port (old harbour) and huge, modern Les Minimes marina. The old town has half-timbered medieval houses and Renaissance architecture, including passageways covered by 17th-century arches.
It is one of the best preserved port towns in France with, as well as the fortified harbour, many smart shops and numerous seafood restaurants.
A boat trip will take you to the pretty island of Ile d'Aix where there are no cars. The island is surrounded by sandy beaches, vineyards and oyster beds.
During August there is a jazz festival – Festival de jazz à Fouras – in Fouras-les-Bains, not far around the coast from La Rochelle.
